About us

Executive Summary

The WSPCF was established in 2003, as a living legacy to the late Walter Sisulu and his widow, Albertina, both of whom have dedicated their lives to helping children in need. Among its patrons are former president Mr. Nelson Mandela and United Nations Global Messenger of Peace, Her Royal Highness Princess Haya Al-Hussein. The WSPCF is an independent, philanthropic cardiac foundation for Africa, focusing on delivering life-saving cardiac intervention and surgical correction for underprivileged children with congenital heart defects from across Africa, between the ages of 0-18. Since its inception, this award winning foundation has raised over ZAR50 million and facilitated over 700 procedures on indigent cardiac babies and children.

The Need

Globally, one in every one hundred children is born with a cardiac defect; with early diagnosis - 95% of these cases are correctable. Less than 20% of South African children have access to medical insurance; the figure is less than 1% across the rest of the continent. There are currently 3000 children waiting for corrective surgical assistance at our South African public sector cardiac facilities. The number of children with cardiac defects in across Africa, is conservatively estimated at more than 350,000. Through its vision of promoting equity and building capacity in South Africa and on the continent, WSPCF continuously works to bridge this gap.

Babies born with congenital heart defects may not survive without corrective intervention or surgery. The cost of a once off/one time, life-saving, open heart surgery will allow the baby/child to develop normally and enjoy the benefits of a healthy life. There is a cost saving impact on the family as there is no longer a need for repeated visits to the clinic or for any medications. In addition, the stress of an ill child on a functional family life is radically reduced.

The vision is to build capacity and promote equity for indigent cardiac babies and children in Africa. The foundation aims to achieve this via our three objectives, namely (i) cardiac surgery and intervention; (ii) training and skills development and (iii) research in the field of paediatric cardiac healthcare.
